- UK modems turn out to have a slightly different wiring
- on their RJ11 connecter.

- An RJ11 connecter has 6 contact point, of which normally
- only 4 are used.

- In continental Europe the speech signal is carried by contact
- points 3 and 4 (the inside ones).

- In the UK these are the numbers 2 and 5 (the outside ones).
- Rewiring these contact points did the job.
